HOWELL SCHOOL APARTMENTS
Howell School, built in 1889 and rebuilt in 1902 after a fire, is Dothan, Alabama's finest remaining piece of historic architecture, now transformed into Howell School Apartments, a 55-unit senior living property. The building has served various roles, including as a grammar school, Salvation Army Red Shield Club, and textile mill, before its recent conversion. The renovation, divided into two phases and completed in 2020, includes 22 units within the historic building and 33 new construction units. This project not only preserves history but also provides much-needed affordable housing for seniors, stimulating local economic revitalization and setting an example for future adaptive reuse developments.
